Windsurf Lagos: A Beginner-Friendly Start and a Smooth Path to Progress

Lagos is more than just a beautiful town in southern Portugal. For windsurfers, it’s a destination with its own personality: the ocean, the reliable northeast wind, and wide lagoons attract riders from all over Europe. Whether you’ve never stepped on a board or only tried a few wobbly attempts at your local beach, Lagos — can accelerate your progress dramatically.

Lagos Is the Perfect Place to Begin

1. Beaches Where Falling Isn’t Scary

For beginners, the most important things are calm water and predictable conditions. Lagos offers such “natural classrooms” for windsurf Lagos:

  • Meia Praia — a massive 5 km. sandy arc with a long shallow and flat area. The water is gentle, and the waves are soft enough not to break your balance.
  • Ria de Alvor — a lagoon with steady wind, big shallow area and comfortable depth. Perfect for first attempts without fear of drifting or encountering strong waves.

These spots make early sessions safe, comfortable, and fun — ideal for anyone starting windsurfing Lagos.

2. Stable Wind

In summer, the steady Nortada wind pushes the sail just enough for beginners to feel the pull without being overwhelmed. These conditions are excellent for practicing the basics and gaining confidence.

3. School With Modern Equipment

Lagos has two windsurfing schools along its coastline, offering boards suited to your height and level, and lightweight sails that won’t tire your arms too quickly. This is especially helpful for newcomers exploring windsurf Lagos for the first time.

How a Beginner Should Start in Lagos

1. Choose Large and Stable Gear

For beginners, stability is more important than speed. The ideal setup:

  • a wide board (150–200 liters),
  • a lightweight sail (2.5–4.0 m²),
  • a soft, forgiving fin.

With such equipment, it’s much easier to understand the basic mechanics of windsurf Lagos.

2. Three Essential Skills

Before cruising around the lagoon, focus on these fundamentals:

  1. Beach or water start — learning how to place your feet and maintain balance;
  2. Tacks and gybes — even slow, simple turns build your control;
  3. Sail power management — understanding when to “take” and “release” the wind.

Most schools in Lagos help beginners master these within just a few hours.

3. Take 2–3 Lessons With an Instructor

This is the fastest and safest way to progress. An instructor will correct subtle mistakes you might not notice yourself: stance, grip, body position, or even where you’re looking. For many riders starting windsurf Lagos, these small corrections make a huge difference.

How to Progress Faster

1. Practice During the Soft Morning Wind

In Lagos, mornings bring gentler conditions. This is the ideal time to work on:

  • stance,
  • basic turns,
  • overall sail control.

As the Nortada builds in the afternoon, you can try more dynamic sailing.

2. Switch to a Smaller Board Gradually

Once you can sail confidently on both tacks and complete clean turns, move down to a 140–160-liter board. It will feel more responsive and give you the “real” windsurfing sensation — a natural next step in your windsurf Lagos journey.

3. Record Yourself

Many schools offer video feedback. Watching yourself helps identify and fix mistakes quickly — a huge advantage for beginners learning windsurf Lagos.

4. Don’t Be Afraid of Falling

Falling is part of windsurfing. The warm water, sandy bottom, and safe environment in Lagos make the learning process enjoyable and low-stress.

5. Build Basic Fitness

Strong legs, flexible shoulders, and a stable core will make your sessions longer and more rewarding. Swimming, yoga, or balance training work well alongside your windsurf Lagos practice.

Best Time to Visit Lagos

From April to October, Lagos offers ideal conditions: sunshine, consistent wind, and warm water. Off-season winds can still be good, but air temperatures drop and conditions become more unpredictable.

Really liked the course. The team is super supportive, you'll really appreciate their attitude once you're out on the water losing ground. They really educate all along the way. Got me exactly 5 days from noob to riding, just as Alex predicted at the beggining. Once again, excellent team and I loved that that the gear is available in great condition and at any size.

Without hesitation, I highly recommend Algarve Kite Center! Alex, the owner, is super friendly and makes everything easy from start to finish. I rented all the equipment and had an amazing afternoon kiting. Safety is clearly a priority here – Alex even has a boat on hand, which gave me total peace of mind. Great experience all around!

Rented kite gear with Alex and can fully recommend him & his team. The gear is of good quality, communication with Alex is easy and the spot is perfect for your stay in Lagos or nearby.

But most importantly Alex's team is great. Vlodymir was really kind and always there to help. Anna loves teaching, is a great communicator and has a rich personality.

Can fully recommend and wish I could have stayed for longer.

We only had two days of beginner courses with two different trainers , both were friendly , patient and very knowledgeable. I had wakeboarding experience so in just two days I could get up and ride as a complete beginner. The place is great as well with shallow water , good for beginners to practice water starts.

We rented equipment a week ago with Alex. The gear from CORE was in great condition and the whole team friendly.

Alex even shared some drone footage of us riding, which was a great bonus. The lagoon was an amazing spot, too. We’ll definitely book with him again when we’re back in Lagos.

Highly recommend! Communication over WhatsApp was easy, equipment all in good condition and everyone very helpful. I’ve had lessons elsewhere with little success but was up and riding on the board today within half an hour. Dimitri is the best instructor I’ve had by far!

Great teachers! The whole group of employees were really nice and patient with us being first timers. We had Dima as our private teacher and he was amazing! They’re all very knowledgeable about the area, the teaching ability, all while keeping us safe. Go with this company for your kite boarding needs because they’re all around a great company.

I'm an experienced kitesurfer so I didn't need a lesson with Algarve Kite Center, but I had another type of 5 star experience; Winds are sometimes tricky and as a wind died very sudden I got basically stranded on the little sand bank in the middle of the Alvor Lagoon. Chances for swimming to shore were not great, perhaps doable but definitely risky. Long story short, we (one other kiter) were first begging the closest boats from "the other kite school" to rescue us (against reward obviously) but they just very rudely dismissed us and drove off... well we found our rescue from Algarve Kite Center - for free! Alex, thank you, my hero and saviour!

Having never been to Lagos before I decided to use Algarve Kite Centre based on the reviews I could find online. I wasn’t disappointed. Right from the first contact Alex was easily reachable and answered all my questions via WhatsApp.

The teaching with Dimtry was excellent and through his coaching with the radio headsets he managed to get me riding up wind and transitioning.

The whole team were super friendly and approachable helping me to grow in confidence as they guided me to riding independently. The set up they have is in a great spot and their use of the boat combined with their local knowledge maximised my time on the water.

Alex also sent me some drone footage of my riding which was a really useful and a great perk.

I had lessons with different schools in the UK before coming to Lagos, but this school is undoubtedly the best I’ve used and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone starting out or looking to improve their skills.

I had done the beginner course somewhere else and wanted to close the gap to kiting on my own. My goal was to start in both directions and ride upwind. By phone I could easily book 2 hours for this. These could also be postponed due to the weak wind until everything fit.
The instructor asked me about my skills and let me do everything myself as far as possible.
He always helped me when he saw that I was getting nowhere or doing something technically wrong. The long sandbar with knee to hip deep water provided safety for trying things out and learning on my own. There was also a boat ready if I fell in the deeper water and drifted too far.
I could kite the newest Core material.
I can recommend the school with its team and will come back 👍🏻
