Wingfoil Lagos

Wingfoil – is a water sport in which the rider stands on a hydrofoil (underwater wing) holding an inflatable sail (wing) in their hands.

«Wingfoil Lagos» The wind pulls the wing, while the hydrofoil lifts the board above the water, reducing drag, resulting in a smooth and fast ride. In short, it’s a blend of windsurfing, kiteboarding, and foiling, but easier to learn and safer because the wing isn’t attached to the rider with long lines, as with a kite.

1. First step on wingfoil is Safety «Wingfoil Lagos»

• Always using life-jaket or impact west
• Using leashes for the board and wing (sail)
• Start learning with moderated wind 12-18 knots and flat water
• Correct wind direction, sand bottom, short mast or 40cm fins on beginner board (board size depending of the weght)

2. Second Step is understanding weather and wind conditions for wingfoil

• Know wind direction Base (check flag direction, tree movement, sand flying…).
• Understand wind window and left/right riding direction.
• Never wingfoiling on thunderstorm.
• Understand safe wind direction, like on shore, side shore, side on ( off shore or side off directions only for experience riders).

3. Know how is working sail (wingfoil)

• First steps with wing control is the best do it on the beach (Why it’s important: wing control is 70% of success on the water.).
• Know keep the wing in a neutral position to avoid excessive thrust and rest (overhead, downwind)
• Point the wing downwind and upwind (move the sail back and forth).
• Catch the draft with a sail and release it(catch the traction by pulling/releasing the front hand).
• Learn to flip the wing;(switch/flip).

4. Balance and start on a large board

First steps is better make on a large board around 120-160l.

• Stand stable on a board with/without a sail.
• Start on the knees and slidaly stand up (knee launch, 5-20 meter travel)
• Use the wing without trying to lift the foil.
• Learning to ride until the hydrofoil lifts the board.
• Goal: Learn to ride without a foil. Why it’s important: If you don’t control the board without a foil, it will be even more difficult to fly.

5. Foilboard control (Goal: short “touches” of the foil on the surface)

• When you start stand up on foil – body weight is a key factor.
• A slight shift of body weight – backward raises the foil, a slight shift of body weight – forward lowers the foil.
• Maintain flight for 1-3 seconds – return to the water without falling
• It is important to learn a smooth, stable speed rather than abrupt movements (Important: let the foil “rise” itself, do not push.)

6. Turns (jibe/tack)

• After the first few meters, turn with emphasis on smoothness.
• Correct wing shifting.
• Control the board with your body, not your hands.

7. Combining Skills and Building Confidence

• 🎯 Goal: Full-fledged independent wingfoil.
• 100–300m flights;
• Acceleration/braking;
• First attempts at tying a jibe or tack in flight;
• Reviewing mistakes and selecting gear based on progress.
