Are you planning a trip to the sun-drenched coast of southern Portugal and looking to explore it from a completely unique perspective? Look no further than stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). The coastline surrounding Lagos is a geological wonderland, boasting hidden sea caves, soaring golden cliffs, and pristine marine reserves that are often completely inaccessible by land.
Algarve is a fantastic idea. Lagos is the ultimate hub for SUP because it sits right between the dramatic, sheltered cliffs of the south coast and the wild, adventurous west coast.
Here is your ultimate insider’s guide to the best SUP spots within a 50km radius of Lagos, packed with local tips on conditions, safety, and scenery.

South Coast: Golden Cliffs and Sea Caves (0–25 km from Lagos)
South coast of Algarve is famous for its sheltered bays and iconic rock formations. If you are looking for picture-perfect flat water and cave exploration, this is your playground.
1. Ponta da Piedade (Lagos)
- Distance from Lagos center: 0 km (Right on your doorstep)
- Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
- Why it’s special: This is the crown jewel of Algarve paddleboarding. Ponta da Piedade is a labyrinth of towering rock pillars, natural arches, and hidden grottoes.
- SUP Experience: Launching from nearby Praia da Batata or Praia do Camilo, you can glide through crystal-clear turquoise waters. Paddle through narrow stone tunnels and look up at cliffs that have been carved by the ocean over millions of years.
- Local Tip: Go early in the morning (around 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM) before the Atlantic breeze picks up and the motorboats start operating.

2. Praia de Burgau
- Distance from Lagos: 13 km West
- Skill Level: Beginner
- Why it’s special: Burgau is a charming, traditional whitewashed fishing village. The beach is naturally sheltered from the dominant north winds, making it an incredibly safe and calm environment.
- SUP Experience: Perfect for families and first-timers. After picking up your Algarve SUP rental, launch right off the sandy beach. You can paddle along the low, rolling limestone cliffs heading west toward Salema.
- Local Tip: The beach disappears at high tide, so plan your launch and landing according to the tide charts!

3. Benagil Cave & Praia da Marinha (Lagoa)
- Distance from Lagos: 38 km East
- Skill Level: Intermediate (Due to heavy boat traffic and open ocean swells)
- Why it’s special: The world-famous Benagil Cathedral Cave is on everyone’s bucket list.
- SUP Experience: While further east, it is well within the 50km radius and a must-visit. Launching from Benagil beach, a quick 300-meter paddle brings you inside the massive cave with its iconic sun-bleached dome ceiling. Continue paddling east to Praia da Marinha to witness some of the most beautiful double-arches in Europe.
- Safety Warning: This area gets incredibly crowded with tour boats. Always wear a leash and a buoyancy aid, and strictly respect local maritime safety regulations regarding entering the cave.

Wild West Coast: Untamed Nature (25–40 km from Lagos)
If you want to escape the crowds and experience raw, untouched nature, load your rental boards onto your roof racks and head west toward the Vicentina Coast National Park.
4. Praia do Barranco (Near Sagres)
- Distance from Lagos: 30 km West
- Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
- Why it’s special: Barranco is a hidden gem located on the south-facing coast near Sagres, meaning it escapes the brutal north-westerly winds that plague the west coast.
- SUP Experience: This is a wild, off-the-beaten-path valley beach. The water here is incredibly clear, surrounded by dark, rugged cliffs topped with wild rosemary and rockrose. It feels a million miles away from civilization.
- Local Tip: The access road is an unpaved dirt track. Drive slowly, and bring plenty of water and snacks, as there are no beach facilities here.

5. Martinhal Beach (Sagres)
- Distance from Lagos: 32 km West
- Skill Level: Beginner (Near shore) to Advanced (Downwinders)
- Why it’s special: Located just outside the historic town of Sagres, Martinhal Bay features beautiful limestone islets (the Martinhal Islands) just off the coast.
- SUP Experience: On a calm day, paddling out to the Martinhal Islands to explore their underwater caves and rich birdlife is unforgettable. However, this area is famous for the “Nortada” (strong north wind). If the wind is blowing, it creates world-class conditions for advanced paddlers looking to do technical downwind coastal runs.

River SUP: Best Alternative for Windy & Wavy Days
Is the ocean looking a bit too choppy? Don’t let your Algarve SUP rental go to waste. The region offers fantastic inland water pathways.
6. Alvor Estuary (Ria de Alvor lagoon)
- Distance from Lagos: 15 km East
- Skill Level: Absolute Beginner
- Why it’s special: A stunning protected nature reserve filled with salt marshes, sandbanks, and flamingos.
- SUP Experience: The estuary offers perfectly flat, shallow water completely protected from ocean waves. It is an incredible place to practice your balance, enjoy a sunset SUP yoga session, or glide past local fishermen collecting clams.
- Local Tip: Always paddle with the tide. Plan to head inland with the incoming tide, and use the outgoing tide to help you glide back to your starting point.

But most importantly Alex's team is great. Vlodymir was really kind and always there to help. Anna loves teaching, is a great communicator and has a rich personality.
Can fully recommend and wish I could have stayed for longer.
Alex even shared some drone footage of us riding, which was a great bonus. The lagoon was an amazing spot, too. We’ll definitely book with him again when we’re back in Lagos.
I will definitely be back and can’t recommend this place enough for others, who want to learn to kite surf/ wing foil!!

The teaching with Dimtry was excellent and through his coaching with the radio headsets he managed to get me riding up wind and transitioning.
The whole team were super friendly and approachable helping me to grow in confidence as they guided me to riding independently. The set up they have is in a great spot and their use of the boat combined with their local knowledge maximised my time on the water.
Alex also sent me some drone footage of my riding which was a really useful and a great perk.
I had lessons with different schools in the UK before coming to Lagos, but this school is undoubtedly the best I’ve used and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone starting out or looking to improve their skills.

Can’t go wrong with these guys!

The instructor asked me about my skills and let me do everything myself as far as possible.
He always helped me when he saw that I was getting nowhere or doing something technically wrong. The long sandbar with knee to hip deep water provided safety for trying things out and learning on my own. There was also a boat ready if I fell in the deeper water and drifted too far.
I could kite the newest Core material.
I can recommend the school with its team and will come back 👍🏻
