Wingfoil Sagres: Guide to Portugal’s Wild West
Wingfoil Sagres is widely known as the “End of the World,” but for the modern wingfoiler, it is where the action begins. Located at the southwestern tip of Europe, this rugged corner of the Algarve offers a unique combination of consistent winds, diverse spot conditions, and breathtaking scenery.
Whether you are a beginner looking for your first flights or a pro chasing Atlantic swells, wingfoil Sagres provides an experience unlike anywhere else in Portugal.

Why Choose Wingfoil Sagres?
Unlike the calmer central Algarve, Sagres is exposed to the full force of the Atlantic. This creates a “wind funnel” effect, making it one of the most reliable wind spots in the country.
- Year-Round Wind: Powered by the famous Nortada (north wind), you’ll find rideable conditions throughout most of the year.
- Variety of Spots: Choose between flat water for freestyle and massive Atlantic rollers for wave riding.
- Stunning Backdrops: Gliding past 50-meter high limestone cliffs and the historic lighthouse is a bucket-list experience.
Top Wingfoil Spots in and Around Sagres
1. Mareta Beach (Praia da Mareta)
Located right in the heart of the village, Mareta is the most convenient spot.
- Best for: Intermediate to Advanced riders.
- Conditions: Works best on Southerly winds. It offers a mix of chop and occasional swell.
- Pro Tip: Great for those who want to walk from their accommodation straight into the water.

2. Martinhal Beach (Praia do Martinhal)
Just a few minutes east of the center, Martinhal is the crown jewel for wingfoiling in the region.
- Best for: All levels (Beginners to Pros).
- Conditions: Famous for its flat water during the strong offshore Nortada. It’s the perfect place to practice your jibes and tacks or clock high-speed runs.
- Safety: Several schools operate here, making it the safest place to take a lesson.

3. Tonel Beach (Praia do Tonel)
Located on the western side of the fortress, Tonel is raw and powerful.
- Best for: Wave enthusiasts.
- Conditions: Direct exposure to the Atlantic swell. Not for the faint-hearted, but incredible for those looking to “surf” the foil on long, rolling waves.

Gear and Lessons in Sagres
Sagres is home to several professional watersports centers. If you are traveling light, you can easily rent the latest high-aspect foils and wings from local shops.
For beginners, we highly recommend booking a boat-supported wingfoil lesson. Because the wind can be offshore at spots like Martinhal, having a rescue boat nearby ensures you can focus entirely on your progression without worrying about drifting.
Essential Travel Tips for Wingfoilers
- Bring a Car: While Sagres is walkable, having a van or car allows you to chase the wind to nearby spots like Meia Praia in Lagos if the swell gets too big in Sagres.
- Respect the Locals: Sagres has a deep-rooted surfing culture. When foiling near surfers, always maintain a safe distance.
- Check the Forecast: Use apps like Windguru or Windy, specifically looking for the Sagres or Martinhal stations.

But most importantly Alex's team is great. Vlodymir was really kind and always there to help. Anna loves teaching, is a great communicator and has a rich personality.
Can fully recommend and wish I could have stayed for longer.
Alex even shared some drone footage of us riding, which was a great bonus. The lagoon was an amazing spot, too. We’ll definitely book with him again when we’re back in Lagos.
I will definitely be back and can’t recommend this place enough for others, who want to learn to kite surf/ wing foil!!

The teaching with Dimtry was excellent and through his coaching with the radio headsets he managed to get me riding up wind and transitioning.
The whole team were super friendly and approachable helping me to grow in confidence as they guided me to riding independently. The set up they have is in a great spot and their use of the boat combined with their local knowledge maximised my time on the water.
Alex also sent me some drone footage of my riding which was a really useful and a great perk.
I had lessons with different schools in the UK before coming to Lagos, but this school is undoubtedly the best I’ve used and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone starting out or looking to improve their skills.

Can’t go wrong with these guys!

The instructor asked me about my skills and let me do everything myself as far as possible.
He always helped me when he saw that I was getting nowhere or doing something technically wrong. The long sandbar with knee to hip deep water provided safety for trying things out and learning on my own. There was also a boat ready if I fell in the deeper water and drifted too far.
I could kite the newest Core material.
I can recommend the school with its team and will come back 👍🏻
