Windsurfing Carvoeiro: Algarve’s Most Scenic Ride
If you are looking to escape the crowds and challenge yourself against the backdrop of the iconic Algar Seco, windsurfing Carvoeiro is your next must-do activity.
While the neighboring towns are famous for wide sandy stretches, Carvoeiro offers something for the adventurous soul. Nestled between towering golden cliffs and hidden sea caves, windsurfing here isn’t just a sport—it’s a sightseeing tour at high speed.

Windsurfing Carvoeiro Experience: What to Expect
Unlike the long open bays of the central Algarve, Carvoeiro features a “launch-and-explore” vibe. The coastline here is serrated with caves and rock formations, creating unique wind tunnels and water conditions.
- The Launch: Most sessions start from the main town beach (Praia de Carvoeiro) or the nearby Praia do Centeanes.
- The Conditions: Expect a mix of rolling Atlantic swells and choppy water near the cliffs.
- The View: There is no better way to see the Benagil Cave area than from the water, powered by nothing but the wind.

Top Spots Near Carvoeiro
1. Praia de Carvoeiro (Town Center)
The heart of the village. It’s a narrow launch point, so it’s best suited for intermediate to advanced sailors who can navigate out of the bay quickly. Once you’re out, the wind stabilizes and the view of the whitewashed village is unbeatable.
2. Praia de Vale Centeanes
Located just east of the center, this beach offers a bit more space. The cliffs here provide some protection from North winds, making it an interesting spot for those looking to practice jibes in slightly more sheltered waters before heading into the open sea.
3. Ferragudo (The River Entrance)
Just a 10-minute drive from Carvoeiro, the Arade River mouth near Ferragudo offers flat-water conditions. This is the go-to spot for beginners or those looking for high-speed GPS runs without the ocean swell.

Essential Gear and Local Tips for WINDSURFING CARVOEIRO
- Mind the Rocks: Carvoeiro is famous for its limestone formations. Always scout the area at low tide to identify any submerged rocks near the shore.
- The “Cave” Effect: The cliffs can cause “wind shadows” (areas with no wind). Stay at least 100-200 meters off the coast to ensure your sail stays full and steady.
- Rentals & Lessons: While Carvoeiro is more boutique, several mobile windsurfing schools operate in the area. It is highly recommended to book a guided “Coastal Cruise” if you want to see the caves safely.
- Parking: In the summer, Carvoeiro gets busy! Arrive before 10:00 AM if you are bringing your own van and gear.
Pro Tip: After your session, head to one of the cliff-top bars for a “Premo” (local beer). Watching the sunset over the spot you just sailed is a quintessential Algarve experience.
Conclusion
Windsurfing Carvoeiro is for the sailor who wants more than just a flat-water run. It’s for the explorer. Between the emerald waters and the cathedral-like caves, it offers a technical but rewarding experience that stays with you long after you’ve de-rigged.

But most importantly Alex's team is great. Vlodymir was really kind and always there to help. Anna loves teaching, is a great communicator and has a rich personality.
Can fully recommend and wish I could have stayed for longer.
Alex even shared some drone footage of us riding, which was a great bonus. The lagoon was an amazing spot, too. We’ll definitely book with him again when we’re back in Lagos.
I will definitely be back and can’t recommend this place enough for others, who want to learn to kite surf/ wing foil!!

The teaching with Dimtry was excellent and through his coaching with the radio headsets he managed to get me riding up wind and transitioning.
The whole team were super friendly and approachable helping me to grow in confidence as they guided me to riding independently. The set up they have is in a great spot and their use of the boat combined with their local knowledge maximised my time on the water.
Alex also sent me some drone footage of my riding which was a really useful and a great perk.
I had lessons with different schools in the UK before coming to Lagos, but this school is undoubtedly the best I’ve used and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone starting out or looking to improve their skills.

Can’t go wrong with these guys!

The instructor asked me about my skills and let me do everything myself as far as possible.
He always helped me when he saw that I was getting nowhere or doing something technically wrong. The long sandbar with knee to hip deep water provided safety for trying things out and learning on my own. There was also a boat ready if I fell in the deeper water and drifted too far.
I could kite the newest Core material.
I can recommend the school with its team and will come back 👍🏻
