Windsurfing Faro: Flat-Water Gem of the Ria Formosa
Faro is a hidden treasure for wind-seekers. While the rest of the Algarve focuses on the crashing waves of the Atlantic, windsurfing Faro is defined by the unique, glassy waters of the Ria Formosa lagoon.
While many flock to the Algarve for its cliff-backed beaches, the local windsurfing community knows that Faro offers something truly special. As the gateway to the Ria Formosa Natural Park, Faro provides a sprawling network of lagoons and barrier islands that create a playground of flat water and consistent breezes.
If you are a fan of high-speed slalom, freestyle tricks, or if you are looking for the safest environment to take your first lesson, windsurfing Faro is a world-class choice.

Faro Difference: Why Windsurf the Lagoon?
The geography of Faro is its greatest asset. The city is separated from the ocean by a series of sandbar islands (Ilha de Faro, Ilha Deserta, and Culatra), creating a protected “inner sea.”
- Mirror-Like Conditions: The lagoon side is sheltered from the Atlantic swell, offering the kind of “butter-flat” water that speed enthusiasts dream of.
- Thermal Reliability: During the summer months, the heat from the inland salt pans creates a reliable thermal draw, pulling in a steady sea breeze even when the rest of the coast is calm.
- Beginner-Friendly Depths: Large areas of the lagoon are shallow and standing-depth, making it much less intimidating for those learning to uphaul for the first time.
Windsurfing Faro – Top Spots
1. Praia de Faro (The Lagoon Side)
This is the most popular launch spot, located just a 5-minute drive from Faro Airport.
- The Vibe: Easy access, professional centers on-site, and a friendly local community.
- Best For: Beginners, intermediates, and anyone looking to practice their carving jibes without the distraction of waves.

2. Praia de Faro (The Ocean Side)
Simply walk across the narrow strip of sand to the other side of the dunes, and you’re in the Atlantic.
- The Vibe: Open ocean, rolling swells, and shore break.
- Best For: Advanced riders who want to combine a flat-water morning session with a wave-riding afternoon.
3. Barrinha (The East Inlet)
A bit of a trek to the eastern tip of the island, but well worth it. This is where the lagoon opens to the sea.
- The Vibe: Pristine, quiet, and wild. The wind is often a few knots stronger here as it funnels through the inlet.

Seasonal Guide: When to Ride

3 Essential Tips for Faro Windsurfers
- Respect the Tides: The Ria Formosa is a tidal system. At extreme low tide, the lagoon can get very shallow. Always check the local tide chart to ensure you have enough depth for your fin.
- Airport Proximity: You can literally see the planes taking off from the water! This makes Faro the perfect “weekend strike” destination—you can be on the water within 30 minutes of landing.
- Nature First: The Ria Formosa is a protected bird sanctuary. Avoid sailing into the cordoned-off nesting areas on the dunes and enjoy the sight of flamingos as you cruise by.
Conclusion
Windsurfing Faro offers a refreshing change of pace from the rugged waves of the West Algarve. It is a place of speed, safety, and stunning natural beauty. Whether you’re trying to clock a new personal speed record or simply enjoying a sunset cruise through the salt marshes, Faro’s lagoon is a windsurfing experience you won’t forget.

But most importantly Alex's team is great. Vlodymir was really kind and always there to help. Anna loves teaching, is a great communicator and has a rich personality.
Can fully recommend and wish I could have stayed for longer.
Alex even shared some drone footage of us riding, which was a great bonus. The lagoon was an amazing spot, too. We’ll definitely book with him again when we’re back in Lagos.
I will definitely be back and can’t recommend this place enough for others, who want to learn to kite surf/ wing foil!!

The teaching with Dimtry was excellent and through his coaching with the radio headsets he managed to get me riding up wind and transitioning.
The whole team were super friendly and approachable helping me to grow in confidence as they guided me to riding independently. The set up they have is in a great spot and their use of the boat combined with their local knowledge maximised my time on the water.
Alex also sent me some drone footage of my riding which was a really useful and a great perk.
I had lessons with different schools in the UK before coming to Lagos, but this school is undoubtedly the best I’ve used and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone starting out or looking to improve their skills.

Can’t go wrong with these guys!

The instructor asked me about my skills and let me do everything myself as far as possible.
He always helped me when he saw that I was getting nowhere or doing something technically wrong. The long sandbar with knee to hip deep water provided safety for trying things out and learning on my own. There was also a boat ready if I fell in the deeper water and drifted too far.
I could kite the newest Core material.
I can recommend the school with its team and will come back 👍🏻
