Learn to Wingfoil in Portugal: The Ultimate Lagos Wingfoil School Guide
If you are looking for the perfect place to start or level up your skills, look no further. Our lagos wingfoil school offers the ideal combination of steady wind, safe flat-water conditions, and premium coaching on the deep water by the boat.
Wingfoiling is taking the watersports world by storm, and it’s easy to see why. Combining the freedom of windsurfing, the thrill of kitesurfing, and the surreal feeling of flying over water on a hydrofoil, it is the ultimate ocean adventure.
In this comprehensive guide, we’ll break down exactly what to expect from your learning journey in the beautiful Lagos lagoon and why our school is your best ticket to flying on the foil.

Why Choose the Lagos Lagoon for Wingfoiling?
Location is everything when you are learning to wingfoil. Trying to master a wing and a foil in choppy open ocean waves can be frustrating. That is why our lessons take place in the sheltered Alvor lagoon, just minutes from Lagos.
- Butter-Smooth Water: No shorebreak or massive waves. You can focus 100% on your gear and balance.
- Consistent Wind: Positioned perfectly to catch the reliable Portuguese Nortada (north wind), giving you steady power in your wing.
- Safety First: The lagoon offers a enclosed environment, meaning you’ll never get swept out to the open sea.
Step-by-Step: Your Wingfoil Learning Journey
Learning to wingfoil is highly rewarding, but it requires a structured approach. At our lagos wingfoil school, we break the process down into manageable, highly effective steps to get you foiling safely and quickly.

Step 1: Land-Based Basics & Wing Handling
Before hitting the water, you need to understand the wind. On the safety of the beach, your instructor will teach you:
- How to carry and secure the wing.
- How to flip the wing and position it to catch the wind.
- The mechanics of powering up (accelerating) and de-powering (braking) using the handles.
Step 2: Equipment Setup & Safety Briefing
Understanding your gear is crucial for independence. You will learn how to properly inflate the wing to the correct PSI, assemble the hydrofoil mast and fuselage, and attach it to a high-volume, stable beginner board. We also cover essential safety protocols and how to use your board and wing leashes.

Step 3: First Water Tries (Taxing on a Large Board)
Now it’s time to get wet! You’ll start on a stable, high-volume board without the foil first, or with a very short training mast. The goal here is to learn how to kneel, stand up, and taxi across the wind while maintaining your balance.
Step 4: Boat-Assisted Foiling (The Secret to Fast Progress)
This is where our school truly stands out. Instead of making you struggle with the wing and the foil at the same time, we use a dedicated support boat to tow you.
By eliminating the wing at this stage, you can focus entirely on the feeling of the foil. You will learn how to find your stance, shift your weight, and experience your very first “flights” above the water at a controlled speed.
Step 5: Combining Wing and Foil on Deep Water
Once you can taxi with the wing and balance on the foil separately, we bring them together. Using our boat support, we take you out to the deep-water zones of the lagoon. Here, you have infinite space to ride without worrying about shallow sandbars or tides. With the wind in your wing and the foil under your feet, you will make the transition from taxiing to full, sustained flight.

The Advantages of Training with Our Lagos Wingfoil School
We don’t just offer rentals and lessons; we provide a premium, tailored experience designed to make you a confident, independent rider.
🚤 Professional Boat Support & Deep-Water Training
Most schools teach from the shore, meaning you spend half your lesson walking back upwind on the beach. Not with us. Our dedicated motorboat stays with you on the deep water.
- No Upwind Walking: If you drift downwind, the boat picks you up. You spend 100% of your time actually practicing.
- Real-Time Coaching: Your instructor is right next to you in the boat, giving immediate feedback.
- Total Peace of Mind: You are always safe, supervised, and supported.

But most importantly Alex's team is great. Vlodymir was really kind and always there to help. Anna loves teaching, is a great communicator and has a rich personality.
Can fully recommend and wish I could have stayed for longer.
Alex even shared some drone footage of us riding, which was a great bonus. The lagoon was an amazing spot, too. We’ll definitely book with him again when we’re back in Lagos.
I will definitely be back and can’t recommend this place enough for others, who want to learn to kite surf/ wing foil!!

The teaching with Dimtry was excellent and through his coaching with the radio headsets he managed to get me riding up wind and transitioning.
The whole team were super friendly and approachable helping me to grow in confidence as they guided me to riding independently. The set up they have is in a great spot and their use of the boat combined with their local knowledge maximised my time on the water.
Alex also sent me some drone footage of my riding which was a really useful and a great perk.
I had lessons with different schools in the UK before coming to Lagos, but this school is undoubtedly the best I’ve used and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone starting out or looking to improve their skills.

Can’t go wrong with these guys!

The instructor asked me about my skills and let me do everything myself as far as possible.
He always helped me when he saw that I was getting nowhere or doing something technically wrong. The long sandbar with knee to hip deep water provided safety for trying things out and learning on my own. There was also a boat ready if I fell in the deeper water and drifted too far.
I could kite the newest Core material.
I can recommend the school with its team and will come back 👍🏻
