Kitesurfing Porto: Top Spots, Lessons, and Rentals
Are you ready to chase the wind in one of Europe’s most vibrant coastal regions? If you are looking for your next adrenaline adventure, kitesurfing Porto should be right at the top of your bucket list.
While Porto is world-famous for its port wine, stunning architecture, and rich history, the Atlantic coastline surrounding the city is a hidden gem for wind enthusiasts. From flat-water lagoons perfect for beginners to challenging wave spots for seasoned pros, the Porto region offers incredible conditions, especially during the windy summer months (from May to September) when the Nortada (north wind) kicks in.
In this comprehensive guide, we explore the absolute best kite spots within a 50 km radius of Porto, and how you can get started with professional lessons and top-tier gear rentals.

Why Choose Porto for Kitesurfing?
- Nortada Wind: The strong, reliable northerly wind blows consistently throughout the summer, usually picking up in the afternoon.
- Diverse Conditions: Within just a short drive, you can switch from butter-flat river mouths to ocean wave kickers.
- Rich Culture & Aprés-Kite: When the wind drops, you are right next to one of Europe’s best culinary and cultural hubs.
Best Kitesurfing Spots Within 50 km of Porto
Here is a detailed breakdown of the top kite spots around Porto, all located within a 45-minute drive from the city center.
1. Esposende (Ultimate All-Rounder)
- Distance from Porto: ~45 km North
- Water Type: Flat water lagoon & Atlantic waves
- Best For: All levels (Beginners to Advanced)
Esposende is widely considered the mecca of kitesurfing Porto and the surrounding region. Situated at the mouth of the Cávado River, a long sandspit separates the river from the open ocean. This creates a massive, shallow flat-water lagoon on the inside—making it the safest and easiest place for beginners to take lessons and for freestylers to practice new tricks. On the ocean side of the sandspit, wave riders will find excellent clean breaks.

2. Praia de Matosinhos (The City Spot)
- Distance from Porto: ~10 km (Accessible by metro)
- Water Type: Ocean chop and waves
- Best For: Intermediate to Advanced / Surf-Kiting
If you don’t want to travel far from the city center, Matosinhos is your backyard spot. Protected by a massive harbor wall on the northern end, it filters out the heaviest Atlantic swells, offering manageable waves and choppy water. It gets busy with swimmers and surfers in the summer, so strict beach rules apply, but during the shoulder seasons and windy afternoons, it is a highly convenient urban kite spot.

3. Cabedelo Beach / Viana do Castelo (The Wind Machine)
- Distance from Porto: ~65 km North (Slightly beyond the 50km mark, but an absolute must-mention)
- Water Type: Chop, rolling swell, and flat water near the breakwater
- Best For: Intermediate to Advanced
While technically a bit further up the coast, Praia do Cabedelo is too legendary to leave out. The side-shore Nortada wind is accelerated here by the local geography, making it the most consistent wind machine in Northern Portugal. The massive breakwater creates a patch of flat water right next to it, while further down the beach, you will find world-class waves.

4. Esmoriz & Cortegaça (Uncrowded Wave Spots)
- Distance from Porto: ~30 km South
- Water Type: Open ocean waves
- Best For: Advanced wave riders
Heading south of Porto, the coastline opens up into long, sandy stretches. Esmoriz and Cortegaça offer raw Atlantic conditions. There are no lagoons here, so you will be launching directly into the shorebreak. It’s a fantastic area for strapless wave riding and hydrofoiling when the swell is smaller. The best part? It is rarely crowded.

But most importantly Alex's team is great. Vlodymir was really kind and always there to help. Anna loves teaching, is a great communicator and has a rich personality.
Can fully recommend and wish I could have stayed for longer.
Alex even shared some drone footage of us riding, which was a great bonus. The lagoon was an amazing spot, too. We’ll definitely book with him again when we’re back in Lagos.
I will definitely be back and can’t recommend this place enough for others, who want to learn to kite surf/ wing foil!!

The teaching with Dimtry was excellent and through his coaching with the radio headsets he managed to get me riding up wind and transitioning.
The whole team were super friendly and approachable helping me to grow in confidence as they guided me to riding independently. The set up they have is in a great spot and their use of the boat combined with their local knowledge maximised my time on the water.
Alex also sent me some drone footage of my riding which was a really useful and a great perk.
I had lessons with different schools in the UK before coming to Lagos, but this school is undoubtedly the best I’ve used and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone starting out or looking to improve their skills.

Can’t go wrong with these guys!

The instructor asked me about my skills and let me do everything myself as far as possible.
He always helped me when he saw that I was getting nowhere or doing something technically wrong. The long sandbar with knee to hip deep water provided safety for trying things out and learning on my own. There was also a boat ready if I fell in the deeper water and drifted too far.
I could kite the newest Core material.
I can recommend the school with its team and will come back 👍🏻
