Windsurfing Aljezur: Conquering the Wild West Coast of Portugal
Forget the crowded bays and the “resort” feel of the south. Windsurfing Aljezur is a different beast entirely. This is the Vicentine Coast — a rugged, protected natural park where the Atlantic swells arrive unfiltered, and the wind feels a little more untamed.
If you are looking for raw wave sailing and breathtaking landscapes, Aljezur and the nearby legendary spots like Carrapateira are your ultimate playground.

Why Aljezur is a Hidden Gem for Windsurfers
Aljezur isn’t your typical windsurf destination with rows of rental centers. It’s for the independent traveler, the van-lifer, and the wave enthusiast.
- The Scenery: Towering black schists cliffs and dunes that stretch for miles.
- The Space: Even in peak season, you won’t be fighting for a spot on the water.
- Dual Exposure: With beaches like Amoreira and Arrifana, you can find a spot that works in almost any swell direction.
The Best Spots Around Aljezur
1. Carrapateira (Praia da Bordeira)
Just a short drive south of Aljezur lies the crown jewel: Carrapateira.
- The Conditions: This is a world-class wave spot. The beach is massive, and when the Nortada kicks in side-shore, it creates some of the longest wave rides in Portugal.
- The Lagoon: At high tide, a shallow lagoon often forms on the sand — a secret paradise for freestyle practice before heading into the breakers.
- Level: Intermediate to Expert. The currents here can be powerful.

2. Praia da Amoreira
Located right at the mouth of the Aljezur river.
- The Setup: A stunning mix of river mouth flat water and ocean waves. It’s one of the most photogenic spots for windsurfing in Aljezur.
- Pro Tip: Best on a rising tide. The river mouth provides a bit of a safety net, but watch out for the sandbars that shift every season.

3. Praia do Amado
Located just south of Carrapateira, Amado is the most “user-friendly” of the west coast beaches.
- The Vibe: High energy, lots of surf schools, and a great parking lot for vans.
- The Wind: Often a bit more consistent than at Arrifana, with plenty of room to rig up your gear.

Windsurfing Aljezur Essentials
| Feature | What to Expect |
| Primary Wind | Nortada (NW) – strongest from May to September |
| Water Temp | Chilly (15°C – 19°C). Bring a good 4/3mm wetsuit. |
| Skill Level | Mostly Wave / Bump & Jump (Not for absolute beginners) |
| Crowds | Low to Moderate (mostly surfers, few windsurfers) |
Local Pro-Tips for Aljezur
- Bring Your Own Kit: Unlike Sagres, Aljezur is wild. There aren’t many dedicated windsurf shops right on the beach, so make sure you have spare fins, extensions, and a repair kit in your van.
- Respect the Surfers: These beaches are famous for surfing. Always follow right-of-way rules and give the surf schools plenty of space.
- The “Morning Fog”: Don’t be fooled by a misty morning. The sun usually burns through by 1 PM, and that’s when the thermal wind starts to howl.
- Stay Mobile: The best part of windsurfing Aljezur is the hunt. Check Bordeira first; if it’s too big, head to Amoreira.

Beyond the Board: The Aljezur Vibe
When the wind drops, Aljezur offers the best “slow life” in Portugal. Grab a sweet potato pastry (the local specialty), hike the Rota Vicentina trails, or enjoy a sunset beer at a clifftop bar in Arrifana. This is where you come to recharge and reconnect with the elements.
Is your quiver ready? The wild west coast is calling.

But most importantly Alex's team is great. Vlodymir was really kind and always there to help. Anna loves teaching, is a great communicator and has a rich personality.
Can fully recommend and wish I could have stayed for longer.
Alex even shared some drone footage of us riding, which was a great bonus. The lagoon was an amazing spot, too. We’ll definitely book with him again when we’re back in Lagos.
I will definitely be back and can’t recommend this place enough for others, who want to learn to kite surf/ wing foil!!

The teaching with Dimtry was excellent and through his coaching with the radio headsets he managed to get me riding up wind and transitioning.
The whole team were super friendly and approachable helping me to grow in confidence as they guided me to riding independently. The set up they have is in a great spot and their use of the boat combined with their local knowledge maximised my time on the water.
Alex also sent me some drone footage of my riding which was a really useful and a great perk.
I had lessons with different schools in the UK before coming to Lagos, but this school is undoubtedly the best I’ve used and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone starting out or looking to improve their skills.

Can’t go wrong with these guys!

The instructor asked me about my skills and let me do everything myself as far as possible.
He always helped me when he saw that I was getting nowhere or doing something technically wrong. The long sandbar with knee to hip deep water provided safety for trying things out and learning on my own. There was also a boat ready if I fell in the deeper water and drifted too far.
I could kite the newest Core material.
I can recommend the school with its team and will come back 👍🏻
