Whether you are a complete beginner looking for professional lessons or an experienced rider needing premium gear rental, the Lisbon coast has something for everyone. Within just a 50-kilometer radius of the city center, you’ll find everything from flat-water lagoons to challenging Atlantic wave spots.
In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the absolute best kitesurfing spots around Lisbon, detailed by location, conditions, and suitability.

Why Choose Lisbon for Kitesurfing?
Lisbon enjoys a Mediterranean climate with strong Atlantic influences. The star of the show here is the Nortada (the strong northerly wind), which blows consistently from May to September. Combined with mild water temperatures and over 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s a paradise for wind seekers.
Pro Tip: Even in the summer, the Atlantic can be chilly. A 3/2mm or 4/3mm wetsuit is highly recommended for most spots around Lisbon.

1. Lagoa de Albufeira (The Flat-Water Paradise)
- Distance from Lisbon: ~40 km south
- Best for: Beginners, freestyle progression, and foil boarding
- Wind direction: N, NW (Nortada), SW
Located just south of the Tagus River, Lagoa de Albufeira is arguably the best spot for kitesurfing Lisbon beginners. It is a shallow, coastal lagoon separated from the open ocean by a wide sandbar.
- The Conditions: The inside of the lagoon offers perfectly flat, waist-deep water, making it incredibly safe and easy to practice your first board starts or perfect new freestyle tricks. If you crave waves, you can simply walk over the sandbar to the ocean side.
- Our Services: This is our primary location for kitesurfing lessons. The calm waters ensure fast and safe progression.

2. Costa da Caparica (Nova Vaga & Fonte da Telha)
- Distance from Lisbon: ~20 km to 35 km south
- Best for: Intermediate to advanced riders, wave enthusiasts
- Wind direction: NW, W, SW
Costa da Caparica is a massive, continuous stretch of golden sand beaches extending south of Lisbon. Two specific zones stand out for kitesurfing: Praia da Nova Vaga and Fonte da Telha.
- The Conditions: Nova Vaga is the historical hub for local kiters. The Nortada blows side-onshore here, creating a mix of chop and nice wave kickers. Fonte da Telha, located a bit further south, offers similar conditions but often with slightly cleaner waves and more space on the beach during the busy summer months.
- Our Services: Perfect for gear rental if you already know how to ride upwind and want to experience the true Portuguese Atlantic vibe.

3. Guincho Beach (The Wild and Windy Wave Arena)
- Distance from Lisbon: ~35 km west (near Cascais)
- Best for: Advanced riders and wave professionals ONLY
- Wind direction: N, NW
Praia do Guincho is world-famous, having hosted numerous windsurfing and kitesurfing world cups. It is breathtakingly beautiful but highly demanding.
- The Conditions: The Nortada gets thermally amplified by the Sintra mountain range, meaning Guincho is often 5–10 knots stronger than any other spot nearby. Expect strong, gusty winds, heavy shorebreak, and big Atlantic waves. Due to strong currents and rocks, this spot is not suitable for beginners or intermediates.
- Our Services: We offer high-performance equipment rental for advanced riders who want to tackle the legendary Guincho waves.

4. Carcavelos Beach (The Winter Wave Spot)
- Distance from Lisbon: ~20 km west (along the Estoril coast)
- Best for: Intermediate to advanced riders (mostly in Autumn/Winter)
- Wind direction: W, SW, S
Carcavelos is Lisbon’s most famous surf beach, easily accessible by train from the city center.
- The Conditions: During the summer high season, kitesurfing is restricted here due to the crowds of swimmers. However, in the autumn, winter, and spring, southerly or westerly winds turn Carcavelos into an excellent kitesurfing playground with clean, powerful waves.

But most importantly Alex's team is great. Vlodymir was really kind and always there to help. Anna loves teaching, is a great communicator and has a rich personality.
Can fully recommend and wish I could have stayed for longer.
Alex even shared some drone footage of us riding, which was a great bonus. The lagoon was an amazing spot, too. We’ll definitely book with him again when we’re back in Lagos.
I will definitely be back and can’t recommend this place enough for others, who want to learn to kite surf/ wing foil!!

The teaching with Dimtry was excellent and through his coaching with the radio headsets he managed to get me riding up wind and transitioning.
The whole team were super friendly and approachable helping me to grow in confidence as they guided me to riding independently. The set up they have is in a great spot and their use of the boat combined with their local knowledge maximised my time on the water.
Alex also sent me some drone footage of my riding which was a really useful and a great perk.
I had lessons with different schools in the UK before coming to Lagos, but this school is undoubtedly the best I’ve used and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone starting out or looking to improve their skills.

Can’t go wrong with these guys!

The instructor asked me about my skills and let me do everything myself as far as possible.
He always helped me when he saw that I was getting nowhere or doing something technically wrong. The long sandbar with knee to hip deep water provided safety for trying things out and learning on my own. There was also a boat ready if I fell in the deeper water and drifted too far.
I could kite the newest Core material.
I can recommend the school with its team and will come back 👍🏻
