LAGOS WINDSURF SCHOOL

Ultimate Guide to Learning with a Lagos Windsurf School: Step-by-Step Lagoon Training

Are you ready to harness the power of the wind and glide across the stunning waters of the Algarve? Windsurfing is an exhilarating sport, and there is no better place to start your journey than in Lagos, Portugal. With its perfect combination of reliable summer winds and protected waters, enrolling in a lagos windsurf school is the fastest, safest, and most enjoyable way to become a confident windsurfer.

For beginners and intermediate riders, the secret to success lies in learning within a shallow water lagoon. In this detailed guide, we will take you through exactly what to expect from your training, from rigging your very first sail to making your first smooth turns on the water.

Why a Lagos Windsurf School in a Shallow Lagoon is Perfect for You

Learning on the open ocean with big waves and deep water can be intimidating. That is why our lagos windsurf school conducts lessons in the ideal environment: a flat, waist-deep water lagoon (like the famous Alvor Lagoon just outside Lagos).

  • Stand with Confidence: Being able to stand up at any moment completely removes the fear of falling into deep water.
  • Rapid Progression: Without ocean chops and waves tossing you around, you can focus 100% on your balance and sail control.
  • Ideal Wind Conditions: The region’s famous Norteada (north wind) blows steadily across the lagoon, creating a safe, predictable learning environment.

Phase 1: Gear Preparation & Rigging (Groundwork)

Before you touch the water, a professional lagos windsurf school will teach you the anatomy of your gear. Knowing how to set up your equipment correctly is vital for your safety and performance.

1. Selecting the Right Beginner Kit

  • The Board: You will start on a wide, high-volume beginner board (typically 180–240 liters). These boards act like stable platforms, making it easy to balance even when stationary. They also feature a large center daggerboard to keep you from drifting downwind.
  • The Sail: Beginners use small, lightweight sails (ranging from 3.5m² to 4.5m²). This ensures you do not waste your energy fighting heavy gear.

2. The Rigging Process (Step-by-Step)

  1. Roll out the sail flat on a soft surface, keeping the top of the sail pointing downwind.
  2. Slide the mast gently into the mast sleeve until it reaches the very top.
  3. Attach the boom at chest height and lock the clamp securely onto the mast.
  4. Thread and pull the downhaul rope through the bottom pulleys to apply tension. This shapes the sail properly.
  5. Tension the outhaul at the back of the boom to flatten the sail profile.
  6. Connect the rig to the board using the mast foot. Ensure the mechanical rubber joint is locked tightly.

Phase 2: On-Water Training – Step-by-Step Lagoon Progression

Once your gear is tuned, your instructor from the lagos windsurf school will guide you into the waist-deep water to begin the practical steps.

Step 1: Secure Position & Uphauling

Before you can sail, you must pull the sail out of the water. This is called uphauling.

  • The Setup: Stand on the center line of the board, with the mast foot directly between your feet. Keep your knees slightly bent and your spine straight.
  • The Lift: Grab the uphaul rope with both hands. Lean back slightly, using your leg strength and body weight—not just your arms—to pull the sail up slowly.
  • The Safety Stance: Once the sail is clear of the water, hold the mast with both hands. The sail will swing downwind like a flag, and you will stand perfectly balanced.

Step 2: “T-Position” and Getting Moving

  • Forming the T: Turn your body so your back faces the wind. Rotate the board so it sits perpendicular to the wind, creating a “T” shape with your sail.
  • Hand Placement: Move your front hand (closest to the front of the board) from the rope onto the boom. Then, place your back hand onto the boom about shoulder-width apart.
  • Sheet In: Gently pull the boom with your back hand. This closes the sail and catches the wind. Relax your arms, let the sail pull your weight, and the board will smoothly accelerate forward!

Step 3: Steering and Core Controls

Steering a windsurf board is highly intuitive once you know the trick:

  • To turn away from the wind (Downwind): Lean the mast forward toward the front of the board.
  • To turn into the wind (Upwind): Tilt the mast backward toward the tail of the board.
  • Pro-Tip: Always look where you want to go. Keep your eyes on the horizon, not down at your feet.

Phase 3: Turning Around (Basic Tack)

To navigate the lagoon independently, you need to know how to turn around and head back to the beach. The safest turn for beginners is the Tack (turning the nose of the board through the wind).

  1. Initiate: Tilt the mast toward the back of the board to steer upwind.
  2. Transition: As the board turns directly into the wind and slows down, slide your hands to the mast.
  3. The Shuffle: Step carefully around the front of the mast to the other side of the board, keeping your weight centered.
  4. Set off: Swap your hands on the boom to your new sailing sides, sheet in, and glide back to your starting point.

Really liked the course. The team is super supportive, you'll really appreciate their attitude once you're out on the water losing ground. They really educate all along the way. Got me exactly 5 days from noob to riding, just as Alex predicted at the beggining. Once again, excellent team and I loved that that the gear is available in great condition and at any size.

Without hesitation, I highly recommend Algarve Kite Center! Alex, the owner, is super friendly and makes everything easy from start to finish. I rented all the equipment and had an amazing afternoon kiting. Safety is clearly a priority here – Alex even has a boat on hand, which gave me total peace of mind. Great experience all around!

Rented kite gear with Alex and can fully recommend him & his team. The gear is of good quality, communication with Alex is easy and the spot is perfect for your stay in Lagos or nearby.

But most importantly Alex's team is great. Vlodymir was really kind and always there to help. Anna loves teaching, is a great communicator and has a rich personality.

Can fully recommend and wish I could have stayed for longer.

We only had two days of beginner courses with two different trainers , both were friendly , patient and very knowledgeable. I had wakeboarding experience so in just two days I could get up and ride as a complete beginner. The place is great as well with shallow water , good for beginners to practice water starts.

We rented equipment a week ago with Alex. The gear from CORE was in great condition and the whole team friendly.

Alex even shared some drone footage of us riding, which was a great bonus. The lagoon was an amazing spot, too. We’ll definitely book with him again when we’re back in Lagos.

Highly recommend! Communication over WhatsApp was easy, equipment all in good condition and everyone very helpful. I’ve had lessons elsewhere with little success but was up and riding on the board today within half an hour. Dimitri is the best instructor I’ve had by far!

Great teachers! The whole group of employees were really nice and patient with us being first timers. We had Dima as our private teacher and he was amazing! They’re all very knowledgeable about the area, the teaching ability, all while keeping us safe. Go with this company for your kite boarding needs because they’re all around a great company.

I'm an experienced kitesurfer so I didn't need a lesson with Algarve Kite Center, but I had another type of 5 star experience; Winds are sometimes tricky and as a wind died very sudden I got basically stranded on the little sand bank in the middle of the Alvor Lagoon. Chances for swimming to shore were not great, perhaps doable but definitely risky. Long story short, we (one other kiter) were first begging the closest boats from "the other kite school" to rescue us (against reward obviously) but they just very rudely dismissed us and drove off... well we found our rescue from Algarve Kite Center - for free! Alex, thank you, my hero and saviour!

Having never been to Lagos before I decided to use Algarve Kite Centre based on the reviews I could find online. I wasn’t disappointed. Right from the first contact Alex was easily reachable and answered all my questions via WhatsApp.

The teaching with Dimtry was excellent and through his coaching with the radio headsets he managed to get me riding up wind and transitioning.

The whole team were super friendly and approachable helping me to grow in confidence as they guided me to riding independently. The set up they have is in a great spot and their use of the boat combined with their local knowledge maximised my time on the water.

Alex also sent me some drone footage of my riding which was a really useful and a great perk.

I had lessons with different schools in the UK before coming to Lagos, but this school is undoubtedly the best I’ve used and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone starting out or looking to improve their skills.

I had done the beginner course somewhere else and wanted to close the gap to kiting on my own. My goal was to start in both directions and ride upwind. By phone I could easily book 2 hours for this. These could also be postponed due to the weak wind until everything fit.
The instructor asked me about my skills and let me do everything myself as far as possible.
He always helped me when he saw that I was getting nowhere or doing something technically wrong. The long sandbar with knee to hip deep water provided safety for trying things out and learning on my own. There was also a boat ready if I fell in the deeper water and drifted too far.
I could kite the newest Core material.
I can recommend the school with its team and will come back 👍🏻
